Looking for a little whimsy,
a bit of charm,
and a bushel of inspiration?
Feast your eyes on the fantastic felt work of Salley Mavor …
Salley, an accomplished fiber artist and author living in Falmouth, Massachusetts, says she has always been fascinated with “little things” and needlework.
“Manipulating materials in my hands with a needle and thread was so much more satisfying than …
rendering with a pencil or brush,” Salley explains on her blog, Wee Folk Studio. “I found that I could communicate my ideas more clearly and that my hands would direct me in a compelling way. Finding no descriptive term for what I was making, I named my technique Fabric Relief.”
For the past 20 years, Salley has been working in the field of illustration, creating 3-dimensional artwork that is photographed and printed in children’s books. The original fabric relief pictures from her latest book, Pocketful of Posies, are touring the country through 2013.
Salley’s list of children’s books will send you daydreaming through the holidays, and when you at last find yourself desperate to give her technique a try, pick up a copy of her instructional book, Felt Wee Folk: Enchanting Projects and start crafting your own fabric relief pictures, dolls, pins, purses, pillows, and more.
How wonderful this sounds. It is not a medium I have tried. Maybe I will this winter. Thanks for spotlighting Sally’s work.
How does she do such intricate work? Simply beautiful and fascinating. A true artist!
Thank you for introducing us to this artist. Being a hand-quilter I always enjoy fabric art especially if handwork is involved. I will be looking for Sally’s work.
How beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing.
I love the attention to detail. What fabulous work!
