Meet Beau Vine, the latest addition to our Heritage Jersey herd.
I checked on momma, Sally O’Malley, at 11 p.m. Saturday night. She was sleeping quietly, no contractions yet. When I went to the barn at the first hint of light the next morning …
I found Beau. It was Sally’s first calf, so we were fretting, but apparently that was unnecessary. He was licked clean, his cord had been dealt with, and he was already dry from her body heat by the time I showed up. I gave them a fresh bed of straw, some extra alfalfa for mom, and some warm water to drink. There was this moment when I put my arms around her neck and she really did … sigh. And lean into me. “Don’t I know,” I said.
Beau has already been spoken for, so as soon as he is able to leave, he’ll go to his next good home, where he can strut his studly stuff and help bring more Heritage Jerseys into the world.
