Getting Crafty

When Stella’s school asked if I’d head their décor committee for their annual fundraising auction, I was tickled pink. Decorate, merely DECORATE, for a party and not have to do all the other party logistics? Sign me up!

Soon after, I scored this awesome pile of …

burlap sacks. This photo doesn’t do this score justice—two dozen humongous burlap coffee bean bags. The super-cool part is they have all kinds of funky-looking logos from Brazil and Guatemala and all the other fabulous places where coffee beans are grown. So of course I plan to use quite a few of them to decorate for our upcoming auction.

But.

I have so many, I get to use some for home décor also. I have a few ideas up my sleeve, but I’d love some suggestions … ???  Too-much-burlap is kind of a dreamy “problem” for a farmgirl to have, wouldn’t you agree?

Gwen Stefani’s Elevated Basics

Hey, farmgirl fashionistas, here’s one to watch:

Gwen Stefani, the fab former frontwoman of the band No Doubt, is forging a fashion partnership with 7 for All Mankind to create a line of eco-friendly “elevated basics” (plain speak: outfits) made with Tencel, a biodegradable fabric composed of wood-pulp cellulose.

The “how” is really beyond me at this point, but the seemingly space-age technique must be happening right NOW because Gwen’s 18-piece DWP (Design with Purpose) collection will be released this spring.

“What’s so great about DWP for me is it’s different from anything I’ve ever done, working in L.A. and having the factory right here,” Stefani told The Hollywood Reporter. “The actual designs are very simple because it’s all about everyday wear. So that’s different and new.”

Advent Calendar Idea

Maybe you’ll be getting a new deck of cards this year in your Christmas stocking. If so, here’s an idea for what to do with your old deck. I made this scrapbook-inspired advent calendar last year from an old deck of cards.

In the spirit of upcycle and on a mission to make an advent calendar, I rummaged through my craft boxes, finding spare scraps, odd buttons, random thread and lace, and numbers, and then scrounged some holidayish-looking items. Using a fabulous vintage frame I’d been saving and an old deck of cards, I started cutting and pasting, the old-fashioned way. The cards have special meaning because my grandpa, now gone, gave me this deck many years ago after teaching me card tricks. Casino issue, the whole set had been punched with a hole upon its professional retirement, perfect for this project.

Most of my advent calendar is upcycled, but I did use a new alphabet stamp set and pad for some of the numbers and a dear friend lent me her Cricut machine that cuts paper into all kinds of shapes and sizes. Even the styrofoam backing is a scrap I snagged from the ‘shipping warehouse’ side of our farm.

When I showed my mother the finished project, she asked how on earth I burned all the edges of the paper and cards so evenly. Here’s a handy tip: rub the edges of your paper with a brown stamp pad, and it instantly looks rustic, aged, and even a bit burned in places.

Underneath each card is a smaller card with a note that is a 24-day treasure hunt for my children. Every year, I come up with things like, “Where on earth might your dollies be?” And then, underneath their sleeping dollies, sugar-plum lollipops await them or the promise of an extra-long bedtime story.

This year we’re having fun with the Elf on the Shelf. Anyone else doing that?

And a little more holiday shopping…

Look what I found at our local coop, in our very own Glamping fabric!

Alicia at Pink Sweetie is busy making some adorable hair gizmos, snappy pouches, and magnets. She has a great selection on her Etsy store. Happy shopping!

P.S. Can you believe I get to live the background of this photo every day?? I was on my way to the farm with snappy pouch in hand so I thought I might as well enjoy the view and the sun for moment and snap a photo of my snappy for you.

a bit of holiday shopping …

Baby, it’s cold outside! With temperatures at zero and the windchill factor scheduled to be in the negative twenties, we’re all noticing where the cold is creeping in. Hubby is home installing that storm door we’ve been meaning to get to all fall and my dad is out hanging plywood to the milking parlor and hay barn. Our animal shelters were built with their openings facing east because our winds always come from the west, but the winds are coming cold and fast from the east like they never do … go figure.

And me, well, I’m also finding ways to avoid the chill. Christmas shopping. For cold weather attire none-the-less, and perfect for any farmgirl …

Handmade, cozy leg warmers. Love them! And it’s a beautiful story. Owner of Grace and Lace, Melissa, was moved by the loss of her infant daughter to get busy with her hands, thus evolved a line of hand-knit items for sale. I mean, how cute are these?

And this tiny pair? I can think of a few farmgirls I know that need a pair of these. Precious! Thanks to Melissa for sharing her story and her fabulous knitting skills.

My Latest Favorite for Munching

I was sitting at my desk watching the snow fall and munching away on my favorite new snack when I realized, you might like to get in on this little secret.

Any snack food comparing themselves to the joys of “magical yoga pant material,” or “weird nail polish colors,” has made some pretty bold comparisons.

Well, guess what?

They know a thing or two.

Angie’s Popcorn!

I’m telling you, it’s delicious. We make a lot of popcorn at our house, but sometimes I’m craving popcorn in a place or at a time when I can’t get the popper out, melt the butter, etc. That’s when Angie saves me! (I can seriously munch on this snack, the kind of serious where I’ll find remnants in my scarf hours later.)

And P.S. The ingredients are simple, non-GMO, and all high quality. Sea Salt is my fav, but my girls and their daddy love the Sweet & Salty.

Bear/Bare with Me While I Confuse You

I recently used this saying in a e-mail and realized afterward that I had no idea if I used the correct term: “bear” or “bare.” I then realized that was because I have no idea of the meaning behind this saying.

As it turns out, it’s much easier to remember which spelling to use if you know the whole story. (As is often the case in life in general.) 🙂
