celery

Are you a celery eater?

If not, natural health expert Dr. Michael Murray has five compelling reasons why you should become one.

In a nutshell, he says that celery:

  1. is high in fiber and nutrients like vitamin C, potassium, folic acid, B vitamins, and calcium.
  2. contains compounds called coumarins that help ward off cancer and migraines.
  3. can lower blood pressure and cholesterol. “In an animal study conducted at the National University of Singapore, a small amount of this compound lowered blood pressure by 12 to 14 percent and cholesterol by seven percent,” reports Dr. Murray.
  4. is beneficial for people with pain of arthritis, fibromyalgia, and gout (well, its seed is, anyway). A study in Australia found that 34 milligrams of the celery seed extract taken twice daily for three weeks reduced patients’ pain scores anywhere from 68 to 100 percent.
  5. helps replenish electrolytes after vigorous exercise (celery juice is particularly effective because it contains high levels of potassium and sodium).

Celery is one of those foods that you definitely want to buy organic every time. It ranks high on the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen list (number two in 2013), and USDA tests have found more than 60 different pesticides on celery.

Of course, now is the perfect time to plan for next season’s crop of this fabulous fall-flourishing veggie because in a year from now you could be in celery heaven. Tell me, who among us doesn’t love celery loaded with peanut butter? Or almond butter? Or tahini? Or cream cheese? Or … ? How do you take your celery?

Shower Ideas

How many dazzling ideas have dawned on you …

in the shower?

I’ve had more than I can count,

and I can almost always count on coming up with something creative any time I step into that

“stream” of consciousness.

But, why?

What is it about a shower that sends us into sudden throes of genius?

Is it the water?

The warmth?

The privacy, perhaps?

Actually, the shower phenomenon has a little to do with all of those things, which collectively culminate in a sweet state of distraction that illuminates thoughts often overshadowed by the daily grind.

“The shower is the perfect place to cook up big ideas,” explains Mental_Floss. “Research shows that we most often hit creative epiphany while doing super monotonous tasks like exercising or showering. Because these sorts of everyday ritual tasks don’t take up much brain space as you’re doing them (unlike working or investing in a good book), your mind is freed up to wander.”

According to Dr. Shelley Carson, author of Your Creative Brain, “Highly creative people share one amazing trait—they’re easily distracted. And that’s the beauty of a warm shower. It distracts you. It makes you defocus. It lets your brain roam. It activates your DMN (default mode network) and encourages wacky ideas to bounce around. So when the lather rinses off, your light bulb switches on.”

I would bet that businesses have been started, books have begun, and great projects have launched in showers around the globe.

Not to mention some super funny songs:

Dare to share your shower epiphanies?

Do tell!

My Apron Strings…

I had one of those weekends spent at home organizing and cooking. They sometimes feel rare and far between but they sure make for a good week!

WEFTshop

When women weave their hearts and strength together to form one contiguous fabric, they create a magical kind of security, sheltering one another from storm and strife.

Nowhere is this phenomenon more apparent than among the women of WEFTshop.

Advance Warning System

Have you ever been startled by an unbidden alarm from your cell phone?

Well, here’s a little “FYI” that was news to me …

Wireless Emergency Alerts, or WEA, are emergency messages sent by government agencies through mobile carriers to alert the public of imminent safety threats in a given geographic area.

According to the National Weather Service, there are four types of mobile alerts you might receive:

  • Extreme weather warnings
  • Local emergencies requiring evacuation or immediate action
  • AMBER alerts
  • Presidential alerts

If only cell phones had been around in Dorothy’s time …

A WEA will look like a text message, showing the type and time of the alert, any action you should take, and the agency issuing the alert.

How do you sign up for these alerts?

You may not need to.

The WEA messaging system is activated by default on most new smartphones or iPhones (iOS 6). In June, AT&T added WEA messages for iPhone users.

Don’t worry—you’re not charged for WEA alerts, and they don’t count against your messaging plan. But,

if you want to check the WEA status on your iPhone, you can access the menu by going to Settings > Notifications > and scrolling to Government Alerts at the bottom. You can also disable the alerts if you don’t want to receive them.

No alerts found on your phone?

Check with your carrier to see if your phone is capable of receiving WEA messages, and make sure you have the latest operating system.

For more information about WEA capable phones, visit FCC.gov.

Three Bags Full

What could possibly be mysterious about …

sheep?

This is a question best asked of German writer Leonnie Swan, who seems to sense something a bit more …

sharp? savvy? shrewd?

about these curly critters than the average pasture passerby might surmise.

Swan is the author of Three Bags Full, an unlikely suspense novel surrounding—in fact, starring—sheep.

(No, we’ll have no wool pulled over our eyes.)

This is the scene of a crime.

duh, duh, DUH!

Game Changer for the Planet?

Wouldn’t it be awesome if you could do something simple like change your attitude for a weekend and it might change the world we live in for the better?

Of course, there’s a long list of things we can be doing to improve our world, but what about three whole days of no blame? Meaning, for three days we won’t find fault in anyone, including ourselves. Because, really, does it actually matter whose fault something is? If everyone is willing to fix the problem, then what does it matter how it happened? This weekend is all about putting our energies into fixing and finding solutions as opposed to blaming and finding fault.

I like this notion. I like to think that a change in my attitude for a few days could really encourage others to change theirs. Why not? Worth a try? The least it can do is give me perspective, which never hurt anyone, that’s for sure!

My Mother is a Genius

Have you heard of the term drip dry?

(No silly, not the Urban Dictionary definition … defined as a move that females have perfected as a result of no toilet paper/lack of sanitary conditions. Try again.)

I recently tackled the chore of ironing the mini-curtains we have for our new Glamper (debut very soon) with even tinier ruffles. Mothers are always good for aiding in the tackling of such quandaries and sure enough, she had the perfect solution (that for some reason has escaped me all these years).

It’s a GIRL! Meet Eliza Belle

Eliza Belle is here! And a sleepyhead girl at that.

gift_gab-eliza_belle-9048

The doctors and students at the Washington State University Veterinary School were so amazing and took such good care of Etta Jane and little Eliza Belle (born Tuesday morning at 1 a.m.). Here’s a commemorative photo taken when Eliza Belle was just 12 hours old. From left to right, Dr. Lisa Pearson, Erika Larsonberg (2nd year veterinary student), and Dr. Alexis Campbell.

Eliza Belle may just be the smallest calf ever born there, weighing in at only 30 pounds. Click here for Eliza Belle’s debut on the WSU website. I’d also like to thank Dr. Ahmed Tibary and Vet Tech Shirley Sandoval for their generous help as well. It took a village!
