Happy Thesaurus Day!

How many times have you changed your entire sentence because you couldn’t find the right word to describe what you’re trying to express?

Been there, done that. Just a few times.

I do have a secret weapon, though …

Beautiful Ruins

Beautiful Ruins was one of those books that drops off the shelf and into your hands as you peruse a bookstore. Read ME! it yelled. That’s what I love about a brick and mortar bookstore. The perfect book, at the right moment, always finds YOU.

I’d been daydreaming of a place like the scene on its cover, so I thought I’d see what it was about.

words to live by in 2013

Here’s an old 2007 post of mine on our Farmgirl Connection Chatroom that I thought warranted recirculation in 2013. I must say, six years later, it’s still some of the best advice I’ve come across yet …

Hi farmgirls!

I was reading Miss Manners in the paper this week and decided the advice she gave was worth sharing with my girlfriends.

An activist that really disagreed with the mining of diamonds asked Miss Manners how she should handle her many friends getting diamond engagement rings. “I am happy for all my friends’ engagements, but when they go and show me the diamond and ask my opinion on the ring (i.e., “Isn’t it beautiful?”), I really want to explain my position on these stones.”

Miss Manners replied: “Miss Manners assures you that people do not absorb moral lessons from those who trample on their feelings. Rather, they forever associate the unpleasantness of the spokesperson with the cause itself. So if the certainty that you would hurt your friends’ feelings is not enough to satisfy you into mere murmured politeness, how about the certainty that you would hurt your cause?”

The View from our “Offices” at the Farm

Are you celebrating THIS day?

December 15 is National Cat Herders’ Day. To be honest, this is the first I’ve herd of this holiday. But, I’ll be celebrating.

The holiday is not to be taken literally, but rather, it is dedicated to doing the unmanageable. How impossible would it be to literally herd a bunch of cats? I can just picture it now, and the rodeo would be far more ridiculous than any of the adventures we’ve had moving cows from pasture to pasture out here at the farm. (Although we have had some pretty entertaining moments.) Guess we should be thankful we’re not running a cat dairy … for a variety of reasons.

it’s the little things

We’re always looking for ways to make our operation more eco-friendly around the farm. Did you know that 100% of our electricity comes from alternative, renewal sources? Today, Lucas came up with the great idea to re-use our pay envelopes. All we have to do is tuck our paycheck into our purse or pants, grab the envelope and take a little stroll to Brian’s office to return it.

It’s little ideas like these that contribute to our world communities’ BIG goal of reusing and recycling. What kind of unique efforts do you make to reuse and recycle?

Holiday Decor for the Little Janes

We’ve been getting crafty. The girls had a few friends over and we worked on some holiday decor. Using several wood-framed 8 x 10 pieces of canvas, we got started…

We painted. Kids can paint for hours …
