Thanks, NannyJane!

The salad greens are going crazy in the greenhouse at the farm right now, so Mom and I make big salads every day for lunch. I’m known for my love of salads. Whenever I go out to eat in a restaurant, the waiters always look at my mom for confirmation that yes, indeed, the salad I just ordered is actually the only thing I’d like for dinner. I inherited my passion for salads from NannyJane and Mom!

“A co-worker/friend of mine’s husband died suddenly on December 4th, 2012 from a brain aneurysm. As she made the decision to pack up her home and move, she asked me in passing one day what to do with all of his clothes. One of the suggestions I gave her was to make his wool sweaters into mittens for her kids. She thanked me for the idea, and handed over the most beautiful wool sweaters I have ever seen. I cut out the mitten patterns and sewed them together. The lining of the mittens are made from recycled fleece blankets I buy cheap at rummage sales over the summer. I was able to make 5 pairs, for a total of 26 hours.

Of course, she cried when I brought the mittens back to her. She gave a pair to each of her kids, her son’s fiance, her mother, and a dear friend who met her at the hospital just after her husband died during an attempted CT Scan.”

I’m not in Kansas anymore …

Returning to Kansas the first week in May to attend a Glamping Farmgirls on the Loose event was a trip down memory lane for me. Emporia, Kansas is where Lucas and I spent our newlywed year. Of course, it was all love and roses that first year, so Kansas was pretty darn good to me. En route to our event the first week in May, we made sure to stop along my old stomping grounds.

Working Class Heroes

What do cow birthing, mattress recycling, maggot farming, salt mining, skull cleaning, and airport runway maintenance have in common?

One fearless man with, well, more than just a little dirt under his fingernails.

His name is Mike Rowe.

You probably know Rowe from his television show, Dirty Jobs, in which he spent several years traveling to all 50 states, working as an apprentice on over 300 jobs that most people go out of their way to avoid.

Septic Tank Cleaner?

Egads!

Shock value notwithstanding, Mike’s ultimate goal was to spotlight and celebrate hard-working Americans who make civilized life possible for the rest of us.

I love this guy.

And he just keeps getting better.
