I love the colors of this outhouse. This snowy scene brings to mind how families had to have a plan for keeping a path open for everyone during hard winter months. I am wondering what people might have done to make it easier and safer for older and more frail family? Grandparents or disabled family members would have been especially challenged and falling must have been a huge problem.

    Happy Friday MaryJane!

  2. Lisa Von Saunder says:

happy second half of winter solstice Maryjane !

  3. Barbara Criss says:

Disabled family members would not have went to the outhouse. There was a lot of use of chamber pots. No need to leave the house.

  4. Tonita says:

Really like pictures of outhouses. Reminds me of how blessed I am. On my blog I did a post about the old outhouse that still stands (barely) just across from my old farmhouse. Happy to have an inside loo.

All four legged Jersys are safe and sound @MJF!!

Brrrrr, good morning MaryJane!! It is 38 here and Bump and I are out here on the porch snuggled in the fleece blanket and watching birds . After such a long hot Summer , it feels absolutely glorious drinking hot coffee and having chilly air to breathe in! My poor cardinals are looking a bit chilly and Bump buried himself under the blanket .

Wow, what striking colors!! I know this sounds dumb, but my first thought reminds me of the froth on top of a rich Latte. Not sure why that came to mind, but the contrast is just poignant.

    • MaryJane says:

This is my newest bull, Ian, about 14 months old. A fine specimen and my best bull yet. He is Lacy Lou’s boy. Just because there’s froth on the rooftop doesn’t mean there isn’t fire in the furnace:) Good morning Winnie!

This looks like a hawk? We have a neighborhood resident Red Tailed Hawk who shows up in the trees in and around our yard and does his piercing cry. Squirrels be ware!!

Also, two days ago in the afternoon, I heard our first Sand Hill Cranes overhead. It is now time for their annual visit to our state and they are majestic and beautiful. When they fly over in V formation with their ancient calls to each other, it makes me hopeful that there are still untouched areas of beauty which continue despite the messes in the World.

  2. terry steinmetz says:

I know this is a hawk, but what kind?

  3. Lisa Von Saunder says:

ooh red tailed hawk? we have alot of them here in amishland

for Dec 1 as we think of Christma gifts I send you this quote :

” I open the door. The gorgeous guest from afar sweeps in. In her hands are her gifts-the gifts of far seeing moments. the gift of mornings and evenings, the gift of spring and summer, the gift of autumn and winter. She must had searched the heavens for boons so rare.” – Abbie Graham

This is the color that our regional Southern Red Maple leaves turn in the Fall. Right now, along river edges where they grow best, the leaves are bright red with some oranges and yellows mixed in. These colors along with the beautiful sienna orange of the Cypress reflect into the tannin waters of our rivers in a spectacular show.

  2. Diana Shelton says:

Thank you for your contagious commit, I will keep your words of advise close to my heart. Oh, how I love the outdoors, what one single leaf can do on a pile of warm inviting outdoor wood-it warms my soul with a cup of hot tea waiting for me after retrieving objects from the outdoor environment and adding them to my indoor decorating.

Bump has rallied again. The vet called me this morning and so we will take each day as it comes and work to keep him comfortable if he needs anything different than the medication routine he is on at present. He seems to be feeling much better than the weekend and acting more like nothing is wrong. He will never be robust again but as long as he has no pain or other troubling symptoms, we will take that as a good sign and just enjoy what good time is left. Thank-you for your sweet heartfelt comments. I was a wreck this weekend in anticipatory grief.

Beautiful picture. Looks like a woodpecker. We have an amazing woodpecker that hangs upsidedown to eat from our feeders. His undertail is brilliant orange! Fun to watch.

Just look at that beautiful iron work on the bench! What a lovely piece to place where it is perfect for sitting and having quiet time.

Speaking of sitting, the weather has cooled down in the evenings and mornings and I am seriously working on perfecting my PorchSittin’ technique on our back porch. Early mornings you will find me and Bump bird watching and enjoying a cup of coffee. It is a skill worthy of the highest level of participation!
