  1. What is about old falling down barns that just make you want to go out sit, stare, & daydream up all the things that could have happened in that barn?

    • MaryJane says:

This barn is just up the road from our place, sitting on ground that a relative farms. One year L.L.Bean asked for permission to shoot photos of their models in and around it. It is indeed a peaceful place and was well-used in its day, based on the stories told at family gatherings.

Sun Valley (champagne wishes and caviar dreams)

Bonjour, Mon Cheri! Caviar and champagne dreams await you as our very own Alyson Oüten travels to Sun Valley to sample marvelous cuisine, right in her own backyard! Nestled in central Idaho, the renowned Sun Valley is a destination for cuisine, skiing, horseback riding, golfing, ice skating, snowmobiling, fishing, hot springs, biking, hiking, river rafting, camping, and rock climbing, just to name a few. Lucky for Alyson, she happens to live right around the corner. Unlucky for me, because I’m six hours north and would have loved to have joined her because … I’ve never in my life tasted caviar. With Alyson nudging me to give it a try, I recently gave it go while on a visit to Portland.

Take it away, Aly!!!

Basque Country

Much to my vicarious delight, vacation and work commitments recently took Alyson Oüten to Europe for a month; from Spain to Portugal to Italy and Israel. (If you read my magazine or CLUCK newsletter, you’re already familiar with Alyson.)

For some of my Geography Journal entries she’ll take you to each of those stops (and more!). Today she is off to Spain to taste test all that Basque Country has to offer.

Take it from here. It’s all yours, Aly!!!!!

Pop Quiz

Pop Quiz: If you tuck a message into a bottle and launch it into the Atlantic Ocean from Prince Edward Island, where will it end up? Take a guess—there is more than one correct answer.

  1. Eileen Widman says:

I loved the movie. I also look for messages in bottles whenever I am wandering along the ocean beach. So far have not found one but still keep looking.

  2. Meg says:

Wouldn’t it be WONDERFUL to actually find one?!? I would so love to find someone’s handwritten message in a bottle on the beach.

Irish “Ganseys”

Even a hint of chilly weather gets me excited about sweaters, scarves, and sumptuous socks—the woolier, the better. Wool, of course, leads me to thoughts of knitting, and I find myself hankering for a blustery day beside the fire with a lap full of yarn and a warm cup of tea.

Somewhere in world right now, I know there are women actually living my daydream, and I suspect that place might be Ireland.  And given I have Irish blood from my father’s side of the family, it’s a country that tugs hard at my heart strings. Someday I’ll go there, but for now …

  1. Meg – During 2 different recent trips to Ireland, I have some self portraits of myself on the Aran Island of Inishmore – I’m wearing both local gansey and also an Aran sweater my adorable mother knit for me prior to our 2nd trip. I’d like to send the photos to you if you’d like to see…
I left my Mother in the “Aran Sweater Market” one day when I went for an Irish “walkabout” the island alone. She was in knitters heaven and did not miss me one bit. When I got back to collect her later that day, she had been offered a job. Hilarious!

  2. Meg says:

Karen~ How marvelous to have actually been there! I am not quite so talented as your momma but I love to knit and I love a good sweater. This cooler fall weather makes me so excited for sweater season!

Betcha Didn’t Know…

Are you tempted by tidbits of trivia like I am? If so, you’re gonna love this. I got a wild hair to seek out some destinations across the country based on their crazy claims-to-fame. Who comes up with these titles, anyway?

Wouldn’t it be a kick to plan a road trip to every unusual “capital of the world”? I’d send postcards from every one! If you’re game for my game, see if you can match the four “fame claims” below with the cities that boast ’em, then read on to find out if you’re right…

Missouri Ho!

You know I’m a sucker for small-town America. Give me a hardy little burg that thrives on the fruits of agriculture and community spirit, and I’m in heaven. So this week, I’m making tracks to Mansfield, in the heartland of southern Missouri. Never heard of it? Well, you might just be more familiar with Mansfield than you think.

  1. Linda J. Crain says:

I will put the Mansfield area on my next week-end trip list. Thanks for all the great information.

  2. Michelle Parker says:

My parents and I took a genealogy trip in late October and I talked them into going to Baker Creek and the Laura Ingalls Wilder homes and museum. I would encourage anyone to take a side trip and see both. Rural America at its best!

  3. Roxana Argast says:

Lucky you! I have had the pleasure of visiting several Laura Ingalls Wilder sites – Walnut Grove, MN, Pepin, WS, De Smet SD and just last month Burr Oak IA but not (yet) Mansfield MO. Someday soon I hope to get there and will also add Baker Creek to the list.

  4. I love road trips and I love Laura Ingalls Wilder… read all her books as a child before they ever became a TV series… Loved them all over again on TV… I live in Oklahoma not real far from Mansfield… someday I may make it when my life settles down a little. Sounds like a great trip to make with friends.

  5. Betty Stone says:

I will give you my hometown of Alliance, NE. It is the county seat of Box Butte county. There are approximately 9000 souls in that town. My grandfather farmed near there and I can remember going to town with my grandparents on Saturday. Each of them was dressed in their Sunday best. What wonderful memories those were.
