  1. Winnie Nielsen says:

How about that! A bird dwelling with it’s own version of an outdoor spa for bathing. Just like the B&B guests had a few years back. Very cool and what top of the line real estate too.

  2. Amy Cloud Chambers says:

This picture made me smile. Is it from your farm?

    • MaryJane says:

Is it a picture from our farm. This cutie sits on a rail beneath the deck adjacent to the loft above the barn library. It often has wrens living in it. The door is on the other side.

  1. Winnie Nielsen says:

These flowers are lovely. What are they? I am pretty sure they don’t grow down here. By the way, all of the Lilacs were in full bloom in Europe and I enjoyed their sweet fragrances everywhere. They too do not grow down here in Florida.

Land of the Strays

Hundreds of stray dogs are roaming the countryside in Costa Rica.

And, believe it or not, this is actually a happy headline.

You see, these strays are at home in a spacious sanctuary called Territorio de Zaguates (Land of the Strays). This privately funded sanctuary, run by volunteers, turns no stray away.

Multitudes of mutts at Territorio de Zaguates roam grassy fields, lounge on cozy beds and mattresses,

nibble from troughs of kibble,

and generally play their days away while they await adoption.

For some, that day never comes, but they still have a comfortable, loving place to retire.

In addition to providing a haven for homeless dogs and actively seeking potential pooch parents for their residents, the clever Territorio staff created a campaign to make mutts more appealing to the masses. Take a look:

If you would like to help Territorio de Zaguates continue caring and finding homes for dogs, you can donate directly through Paypal at territorio.de.zaguates.oficial@gmail.com or contribute to the sanctuary’s ongoing campaign at GoFundMe.com/costarica-dogs.

Keep up with the Costa Rican canine capers on the Land of the Strays’ Facebook page.

  1. Sally Bush says:

What a wonderful santuary for dogs. We need more of these. Thank you for the help you give these forgotten dogs.

  2. what a brilliant idea to place these dogs! brought tears to my eyes. This idea needs to be sent around the world to help all the unwanted stray dogs !

  3. Krista says:

I love this! I wish we had one here for the many dogs who need a place to go. This is definitely a place I would go and volunteer, along with many other people I know. Dogs have a special place in my heart and I’ll be sure to share this information.

  4. Winnie Nielsen says:

This makes me so happy to read. All those lovely pets have a home and maybe some even get adopted. It just underscores the need to spay your pet and take pet ownership seriously and make them a true family member all their days!

Bus Lady

Behold the beauty of Houston’s Bus Lady, Janis Scott, who may singlehandedly boost public transportation with her bountiful enthusiasm for the humble city bus …

Houston was in the midst of a big effort to redesign their bus system from scratch when Janis Scott appeared, as if by magic. It turns out she had been there, boosting bus morale behind the scenes, for years. Documentary filmmakers, out to make a movie about the rebirth of the city’s public transportation, decided to give Janis her own 4 minutes of fame in the flick above.

Her smile and simply wonderful wisdom are arguably more persuasive than an entire city’s propaganda.

“There’s all types of reasons to ride the bus,” Janis encourages. “Make new friends, learn about things … you want to get people out of their cars and mix, mix, mix. That’s true in any city. Try it, you’ll like it!”

  1. Winnie Nielsen says:

The Bus Lady is terrific! What a city ambassador for badly needed public transportation and a friend to thousands of citizens in Houston. Her collaborative and positive message is an example of how we can make our cities friendlier and more livable. Thanks for sharing this today!

  2. Amy Cloud Chambers says:

The whole world needs this dear lady! Think of the improvements in our health and well being if more people rode the bus. Around here you almost never see more than one person per car on the highway at rush hour. It’s such a shame.

  3. Krista says:

The Bus Lady is the perfect spokeswoman for public transportation. She sees nothing but the positive and the potentially possibilities of riding amongst others of different ages and backgrounds. About 2 minutes up the road from us we have a highly used public transportation route that hits all major cities and takes you directly to the airport. My family travels this way when we need to fly. The ticket to ride to and from costs extremely less then gas and parking!

Lovely Hyacinth coming along. They look so beautiful when all the colors are grouped together, not to mention the fragrance is wonderful!

  2. I just love hyacinths but I prefer the old fashioned wood hyacinths that don’t look like lollipops. the scent is wonderful indeed. I cut a few and put them in a crystal champagne flute . Scents the entire kitchen

Score!

Seventeen-year-old Cedrick Argueta was one of only 12 students worldwide to recently attain a perfect score on the grueling Advanced Placement Calculus exam. More than 302,000 students took the 3 1/4 hour test last year, said to be one of the most difficult college-level tests. Cedrick also aced the English and math sections of his ACT college-entrance exam.

You might guess that Cedrick comes from a privileged private-school background. Nope. He’s the son of two immigrants who came to the U.S. as young adults, his mother from the Philippines and his father from El Salvador. His father never attended high school and works in maintenance at a nursing home, where his mother also works as a licensed vocational nurse.

Cedrick attends Lincoln High School, a public school of about 1,200 students in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, where the majority of students are low-income and 20 percent are English-language learners.

Kudos to calculus teacher Anthony Yom, whose 21 AP Calculus students taking the exam ALL passed—and 17 of them received the highest score of 5, indicating that a student is “extremely well qualified” for a college course in that subject. It was the third year in a row that all of Yom’s students passed the test.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Yom “treats his students like a sports team.” They even wore matching t-shirts on test day, “like they’re wearing jerseys to the game,” Yom said.

Kudos to Cedrick, and extra kudos to Anthony for making a difference in these students’ lives!

  1. Brenda White says:

    Way to go Cedric👍👍

  2. Winnie Nielsen says:

What a powerful story you shared this morning. We need more of such stories in the mainstream media today to remind America of the many gifts our immigrant populations bring to this country and make lives better for everyone!

  3. Wow that is so impressive! Especially to a math dummy like myself. It’s all about the power of teaching and great teachers like Yom ! And it also shows that we need to let immigrants come to our country!

  4. Janice Slater says:

What an amazing story. My husband taught AP History for many years and numerous of his students passed the test slso, many with 5’s.
This teacher definitely is obviously doing an amazing job. My husband was very pleased that there are teachers out there still making difference.

  5. Krista says:

This is very inspiring. I remember how difficult these tests were and realize what an amazing accomplishment it is to receive a perfect score as well as have and entire class pass the test. These results are not obtained from being lazy; they worked extremely hard to get here. Way to go Cedrick and Anthony!
