Winner!!! GIVEAWAY: Autumn Leaf China

The winner of the salt & pepper set from our Autumn Leaf China giveaway is Julie Fanter, who said in response to our query, “share with me something you’ve found useful in my magazine (or if you have a connection to the Autumn Leaf dinnerware, like I do, please share that)” …

“Just received today’s issue in the mail. Turned the page and couldn’t believe my eyes! My parents received the small serving bowl as a wedding present in 1951. I have since found the 2 larger bowls and would love to add to the collection. How fun!!”

and the dish-drainer quilt goes to Annette Garner, who says …

“I have been collecting Autumn Leaf for over 20 years. My sister does as well, and we enjoy looking for finds when we are out and about. We especially enjoy using Autumn Leaf on holidays with large family gatherings. Put my name in the hat for a chance to win an Autumn Leaf dish drainer quilt or a salt and pepper shaker set. I really enjoy MaryJanesFarm magazine, especially the recipes.”

Congratulations, Julie and Annette! Watch for an email from the farm.

Thank you to all the women who responded with such lovely comments. I thoroughly enjoyed reading them!

  1. Phyllis Mills says:

I was disappointed to come to this site and find you have already selected winners. I haven’t had my issue very long.
My Uncle Henry worked for the Jewel Tea Company. I selected some of the dishes from his estate a few years ago. I haven’t seen any of the dishes and was surprised to see it featured in your magazine.

  1. Diana Johnson says:

I save the empty milk jugs and cut out a hole, big enough to hold my gloves and trowel etc. and you carry it by the handle. When done the handle can be hung up on a hook ready to grab.

  2. Diana Johnson says:

I save the empty containers that strawberries come in. I fill up with potting soil, drop a seed and cover it up, close the lid. These have tiny slits on the side, so, I place a lid under it to catch the water and set it in my window till my tiny seeds start to sprout. Can also use empty egg cartons to start your seeds.

  3. Sherry Williams says:

I use 5 gallon pails a lot in my big garden to carry water, haul weeds to the composter, put produce in to carry to the house and so on. The wire handles used to have plastic on them to grab but have broken off. I cut sections from an old garden hose, slit it the long way , slip it over the wire and secure it with duck tape. No more cutting into my hands while carrying.

  4. Years ago I had issues with starlings breaking off green beans & others plants in the garden. My mother-in-law told me to buy a package of aluminum pie pans. Poke a hole in the edge, tie to a rod, twig, whatever I could stick into the ground next to the beans. The breeze would move the pans, make noise, & sometimes even “sparkle” in the sun & keep the starlings away. At first, I thought it looked rather tacky, but actually it added a dab of glamour to the garden.

  5. Denise says:

An older friend gave me this tip for watering my inside plants that would get rid of little bugs. She told me to add a tablespoon of ammonia to a gallon of water as it would take care of bugs and help plants to grow. AND she was right! I’ve never seen another bug & my plants look great.

  6. Colleen Maki says:

Tried and true household or garden hint? To get rid of pesky weeds, pour simple BOILING WATER over the weed, and it’s like magic . . . gone in no time at all.

I’d love to win an Extra Large t-shirt, thank you.

  7. CJ Armstrong says:

We have deer that love to raid our garden, and they particularly like tomato and pepper plants. I find that dog hair on the plants will deter them. I tie up little tufts of dog hair with string and tie towards the top of the plant. That way the wind doesn’t blow it all away. I call them anti-deer “toupees”.

  8. Marsha Reimer says:

I have my grandparents old mailbox standing at the edge of my garden. It still has my grandpas name and address of the house where I spent so many hours as a kid. Now I store gardening gloves, scissors, pruners, extra garden seeds and anything else I want handy for gardening. BTW I love your magazine!!!!

  9. Patricia Robison says:

For weeds and grass that pop up between stepping stones, my husband told me to use Rock Salt to put on them and to put it between each stepping stone. I did what he told me to and the grass and weeds started dying. You could see them turning brown.

  10. Jennifer Yamnitz says:

Do you have socks that are mysteriously missing their mates? I save all of them and put them in my cleaning rag bin. They are Great for a quick little cleaning projects and are especially useful when dusting furniture. You can even wear them on your hands to clean. Just toss when done!

  11. Lorna Boston says:

My best garden tip is to remove blooming flowers before planting, giving the roots a great chance to get stronger before sending up blooms, usually many more than before. Gardening is my LARGEst and best hobby.

  12. Marceile Regelman says:

To keep squash bugs off of zuchinni plants, sprinkle wood ash around the plant every couple of weeks.

  13. Diane zollman says:

When planting onions, I have found that putting Epsom salt in the ground under the onion set deters the cut worms that kill the onions. I was told that the Epsom salt sweetens the ground and the cut worms don’t like it.

  14. Sandy Johnson says:

I use empty milk jugs to start my garden and flower seeds. You cut the milk jug not quite in half so that it is hinged, punch a few holes in the bottom, add dirt, seeds and water. Tape the milk jug back together and you have a mini green house. Raise all my plants this way

  15. Judy W Ford says:

The dish ware does remind me of past kitchen times – AWESOME!!

  16. Donna says:

I save strawberry containers put tissue paper and six eggs from my hens and tie with twine for friend and neighbors.

  17. Barbara Rollins says:

My husband and I live in an extremely wooded area. A friend of mine gifted me with some iris bulbs from the garden of another friend who had passed away. I randomly dug holes in sunny spots in the woods, dropped the bulbs in the holes, and now they bloom all throughout the area. Pretty purples, whites and yellows… A gentle reminder of the woman who nurtured them to begin with and a fun discovery while wandering in the woods.

  18. Martha Wynne says:

I save every jar or bottle to repurpose. I send soup to my elderly neighbor across the street in them. I pick posies and wrap a pretty ribbon around the “vase” to take to a sickly friend.. i create button jars and make pincushions on the lids …. my grandchildren have made piggy banks out of them and designed their own labels….homemade salad dressing goes into those cute odd shaped bottles. The list is endless…. the ideas are fun and functional ***

  19. Rebecca McCoy says:

I mounted an old mailbox to a post near my bee hives. I keep a smoker, a hive tool and a veil in it so if I need to do a quick check on a hive, I don’t have to go back to the house for anything.

  20. Stephanie Brazil says:

I live in mountains with well water. Our well has extremely hard water and it builds up in the toilets. I put white vinegar in the toilet bowl and let it soak overnight. In the morning, the build up wipes easily away with the toilet brush. Very little scrubbing.

  22. I use a drizzle of dawn dishwashing liquid, couple tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (with mother) in a small shallow bowl cover it with plastic wrap…cut several slits or holes in the top… To catch those dreadful nat/fruit fly/tysie flies!

  23. Cheryl Wilson says:

I have some of this dishware from 40 years ago. It reminds me of when my children were young.

  24. Susan Broadmeadow says:

  31. I save the granddaughter’s baby food jars to store herbs that I have dried. I use up file folder labels to adhere to the jars to identify the content. Paula

  32. I wanted drawers in my tiny, old fashioned bathroom, so my then husband and I repurposed turquoise drawers from some discarded refrigerators and built a frame that the drawers slide on and kept the drawer tops as shelves in between. the walls are done in antique recycled bead board, painted back to about the same “hant-blue”, so it coordinated well. We also changed out the old “shot” tub faucet set with a recycled commercial sink set with a soap dish on top and installed antique lavatory from a 1904 house that we helped tear down. many compliments and smiles over the years! My family will add a little water to the soup to share.

  1. Wanda Aldridge says:

This dish set reminds me of grandmas house. I’m pretty sure this is the same set she had, but I never knew the name of it. If not the same it is pretty close. I discovered Dr. Laura Koniver’s articles in your magazine several years back and have been reading and learning from you both ever since.

  2. Sharon Black says:

I have taken Mary Janes Farm for many years and saved every issue because of the beauty, joy and information. I just could not part with even a small piece. I make cards to give to patients in a local nursing home. This week I started to use your beauty for a greater purpose. I am creating handmade cards from art in older issues, bringing even greater value to each carefully saved edition. Your work, talent and affection is going from you, to me, to folks who will also feel your warmth and love. Thank you for each and every issue. Each one has been a very personal gift from your hands and heart to mine and now on to others.

I have found so much useful information in your magazine over the years, but the article about the pink slime in the hamburger changed me forever. I was so appalled by that fact, we searched out a local farmer and have been buying grass fed beef from him and sending it to a local butcher who custom packages it for us. Thank you for your many articles that have enriched my life over the years.

    • Wanda Aldridge says:

YES!! I forgot about that article, definitely an eye opener. Thank you Mary Jane for sharing all of the informative articles about things we need to know!!

  5. Tammi Kaiser says:

Hello, this leaf pattern looks almost like the set my mother gave me when I first moved out. Same colors and look. It was very fun to view the set that was pictured. Life happened, and I lost track of what happened to those simple, elegant dishes. I would love a chance for my name to be dropped in the hat. Thank you.

  6. Linda Olson says:

  15. Joan Booth says:

I have subscribed to your magazine for many years and have saved all of the issues. A few years back, on the front cover was a handmade flag, I believe for the 4th of July, no sewing involved. Instead of a patriotic theme, I made one using orange and white for my friend who lives in Florida and now I’m going to make a Ga. themed one for myself. Of course, I live in the peach state so it will have peach colored fabric, I have seen so many things I would like to make but the flag was #1.
I read your magazine from cover to cover and the day it comes in my mailbox, my work is done as soon as I get my mail.

  16. Wendy Tilman says:

It’s homey and comforting and cozy! Ahhhh …

Hi from Indiana, Mary Jane! I am 72 and love to read and love decorating and crafting and cooking. I ALWAYS discover new authors in Farmgirl BOOK CLUB each issue. The Oct./Nov.2021 issue intoduced me to Donna Everhart books, which I intend to read and although I know who the author Fern Michaels is, I have never read any of her novels. And now I WILL. Years ago I ordered/purchased a special Garlic from you and I sure would love to buy it again. Any chance?

    • MaryJane says:

Reading, decorating, crafting, and cooking are right up my alley. I freed up some of my pasture the summer and so want to expand my garlic crop. If we get some much-needed rain, I’ll surely have some next fall, 2022. Happy reading and thank you for leaving a comment!

  23. Leslie Bailey says:

I have one of my mother’s pieces of the Autumn Leaf collection. It is a round casserole dish. She made the best homemade macaroni and cheese and would bake it in that dish. I enjoyed looking at the collection in the magazine. I did not realize there were plates and such with that pattern on them. It is a unique pattern and the casserole dish brings back memories from when my mom would use it.

  24. Claudia Bell says:

My mother had these same dishes. I knew where they came from, but I thought it was a bittersweet pattern. Now, I know. When we cleaned out my mother’s house, someone else in the family got the dishes. Imagine my delight when I found a serving dish at a white elephant sale. I love it so much. Good memories.

  25. Diane zollman says:

The autumn leaf pattern reminds me of good times growing up in a family of 11 children with loving parents. My grandmother had most of the set of dishes for everyday use. My mother used the serving bowls every day until they were broken. The pattern is very pleasing and reminds me of all the days of working on a family farm. We always seemed to have plenty to eat. I have collected several pieces over the years to enjoy. My latest find was the large rounded pitcher for $6

During the winter months my grand daughters love drinking tea from the “fancy” teapot using the matching cups with saucers.

I’ll even say to my friends, ‘Hey, I think I saw something in one of my MaryJanesFarm magazines about that. Let me look for it for you!’ It’s impossible to pick just one thing about them.”

Congratulations, Teri! Watch for an email from the farm.

Thank you to all the women who responded with such lovely comments. I thoroughly enjoyed reading them!

  6. Melissa Eloe says:

    Dear Mary Jane,
How do I decide what I love most? Everything is inspiring! However, since this is about your Wild Bread book, I will say that it is wonderful! I have given copies to friends, daughter-in-law, sisters and of course, have one for myself! It works well because it addresses grains that are gluten free friendly too. It is so much easier than I thought. Thank you for your dedication to bringing us all to the farm!!

  7. Melissa Eloe says:

    Dear Mary Jane,
I forgot to mention that it was a joy to see your grand girls in the aprons that my sister and I made! Thank you! Melissa

  9. jill judge says:

I have subscribed your magazine for years, just recently bought the Wild Bread cookbook, can hardly wait to try!!! Thanks for the opportunity on the giveaway! Jill

  10. Donna McKeown says:

I’ve been a fan since the beginning of your magazine. I never miss an issue.
    I love love love it ! 😊

  11. Carrie Williams says:

MJF Magazine is the ONLY subscription that I buy and the only magazine I’ve ever received in which I keep EVERY SINGLE ISSUE! In most issues I have post-it note bookmarks for articles that I reference regularly or for recipes or ideas that I want to get to eventually. I love, love, love the magazine! It has kept me grounded during so many long months of difficulty, loneliness, and the long years of returning to college after raising my family. I no longer have my little plot of country property but I still keep up the Farmgirl appearance in my more suburban location (a temporary, but necessary state of being). This is also the ONLY magazine that I have ever gifted to another person…my daughters, friends, neighbors…I think it is the most cheerful piece of mail to receive on a regular basis!

  12. Gwendolyn Deaton says:

I love reading your magazines. They are packed full of wonderful recipes, gardening tips or tips on raising animals. There are also beautiful decorating or craft ideas in some of them. I own all of your books except for the milk cow one and it’s on my list lol. I have been working on the sourdough mother for nearly a month now and will be ready to move it to the fridge soon. I’ve made bread and pancakes and waffles so far and even have some of the mother in packages in my freezer. I’m excited to try all of the recipes in the Wild Bread book. I am also a member of the farmgirl sisterhood and am working on earning badges. I’ve submitted for three badges at this time and have several more to submit for soon. My ultimate goal is to get them all lol.

  13. LaRoyce Eskew says:

Actually I absolutely love the whole way of life your books/magazine depict! The only book I have not yet purchased is “”Wild Bread and I so look forward to the arrival of “Mary Jane’s Farm” magazine every other month!

  14. Wendy Atchue says:

Brings me back to wholesome simpler times. Family, talking about our day at the table and praying over our food. Love your magazine which my sister bought a subscription to for Christmas. Thank you for all you do.

  15. Annetta Vanlandschoot says:

Love the feel of the magazine paper. Wish more on flowers and recycling comes up in it.

  16. Corrine Lanz says:

I’m in the process of downsizing. I’ve thrown or donated all magazines, but I just can’t let go of my MJF! I love everything about the magazine and books, but the first pages I go to are the quilting & stitching/crafts. I have presented quilt history programs for the regional library system I work for, so I love seeing and reading about how quilts connect us to women in the past. Overall I feel the magazine conveys the idea that we are stewards of not only the land, but also of our families’ legacies, and our comminities’ past. We owe it to our ancestors and heirs to honor and preserve these things, and MaryJane shows us how in every issue.

  17. Jo Swigert says:

I love the animal stories, the recipes and pretty much read your magazine from cover to cover. It’s by far my favorite magazine EVER!

  18. Sandi Graham says:

Love your magazine! I learn something knee every time I read it! This issue found it very interesting about the meaning of the “dog days of summer”!

  19. Mary Murray says:

What I look forward to most are the 6 Farmgirl Bloggers…after reading what these ladies have written, I always come away with something new. Not so much a recipe or DIY; I don’t want that kind of take-away, It’s more a sense of sisterhood, sharing the ups & downs & lessons learned. And as simple as that may sound, it can change a person’s whole perspective…what a gift!

  20. Vicky Groom says:

So many great ideas to be had in each of your magazine’s.
My mother in law’s name is also Mary Jane, so who can’t love that Name.!!!? Thank you for all the great ideas, recipe’s and article’s I love it all❤️

  21. Leanne Nipp says:

The first magazine I got was May/June/July of 2008. I quickly got a subscription and I’ve saved everyone of them since! I love everything about it, which is why it’s the only magazine subscription I’ve ever held on to!! Keep up the great work!!

  22. Jo Burch says:

Love your magazine! Reminds me of living with my Grandparents on their farm in Smithfield, Utah. Warm fuzzies when I read. Thank u 🌻

  23. Been reading your magazine for years! I subscribed it to be sent to my smalltown library, to share with our library customers and quickly became one of our most checked out magazine! When Covid-19 hit the library discontinues all magazines and newspapers, I went into shock for the magazines I read each month. Hahaha So, I subscribed to MaryJane’s Farm to keep some normalcy during the Covid, and retirement! Thank you!!

  24. Stephanie Guillory says:

I get so caught up in this crazy life and then your magazine is in my mailbox! Instantly I am reminded of what I need most! Perhaps this towel in my kitchen will be a daily reminder!

  25. Kelly Jarr says:

Mary Jane’s Farm brought me closer to my mother-in-law. Although years apart in age we share a love of taking care of our families in many creative ways. She encouraged my “farm girl” side when others didn’t understand it. Sadly she passed away in April and I miss her every day but now every time I see your magazine it’s like she’s still right here with me encouraging me along.

  26. Sarah Marshall says:

I always find many interesting articles. For example the cheese boards gave me an idea for a lunch when my favorite niece visits. I love your magazine.

  27. Paula Cramer says:

I love, love, love Mary Jane’s Farm magazine so much! Thank you for the opportunity to win the flour sack towel.
I’m only a farm girl at heart but your magazine inspires me to do so many of the things I would do if I lived on the farm. I love the wonderful variety in the magazine and all the inspiration I get for day to day living plus fun projects. I have made a number of the crafty things.. This year I hung the flag I made from last years issue for the fourth of July and got a number of compliments on it..
Can’t wait to get “Sourdough Reinvented WILD BREAD” among other publications I’ve seen offered in the magazine. Thank you so much for making this city-farm-girl-at-heart a happier person when I see the latest issue in the mailbox.

  28. Sharon Mulligan says:

I recently bought my sister and sister in law a subscription so it’s fun to connect with them across the miles through each issue. It’s inspiring, empowering, encouraging and a breath of fresh air!

  29. April Stone says:

Really love the magazine. My favorite part is the Recipes and Crafts. My favorite this month is the Instructions for the Ironing Board Cover and the Pickle Recipes. And was able to help my Dad on how to take care of his cast iron skillets.

  30. Kathy Altieri Bucher says:

I saw this magazine at a Farm and Fleet type feed store in Carrolton, Ohio. I leafed through it and was in love!!! I wanted the mag but couldnt afford it at that moment…. so i liberated one of the subscription catds out of the middle, took it home , filled it out and have been a subscriber ever since. That was 6 or more years ago. There isnt a single page that isnt filled with wonderful info and pics!! Thank you! And if it wasnt for me pilfering that subscription card😂 i wouldnt be a member. Keep up the great work. And im an inner city farmer in CantonOh. The only one. Sincerely Kathy

  31. Anita Allen says:

I love everything about your magazine-it is right up my alley 😉

  32. Melody Wright says:

I’ve enjoyed your magazine for years. I also like the ads 😊compared to most country magazines now filled with ads that totally take away from the magazine. I’ve also given a subscription to one of my granddaughters. It feels good in my hands and even if I don’t do any of the projects, I feel better just reading about them! Thanks for publishing such a high quality magazine we can “hold”!

  33. Terry Steinmetz says:

My favorite part of MJF magazine is all the ways to be creative with what I have in hand. Those made me really think. Then I refer to all your books often. Cast iron cooking is something I’ve done for years, but I love trying all the new recipes or adapt mine to yours. So much more I could say, but it would take too long and I really need to get laundry on the line!

  34. Joy Ellis says:

I love your magazine! I look forward to receiving each one! I especially enjoy the creativity contained in each.

  35. Joan Berg says:

I like the recipes and focus on natural foods.

  36. Carrie DeFossett says:

I discovered MJF several years ago at our local Tractor Supply Store, and I instantly fell in love. My husband and I live on his 108-year-old family farm (though we lease the farmland out) and I have wanted to cultivate that farm life for our family. MJF is such an inspiration to me and gives me soooo many ideas, sometimes in fact, I go to sit down with it and can’t find it for a day or so, I believe my husband hides it from me. 🙂

This last spring I decided to get a subscription to MJF and join the Farmgirl Sisterhood. I am so excited when each issue arrives. I have been pouring over the Farmgirl Sisterhood Merit Badges book and MaryJane’s Ideabook Cookbook Lifebook getting ideas and making plans. I have plans to purchase all your other books as well.

I just wanted to add a Thank You to you MaryJane, for sharing a part of yourself with us and helping me to see how important it is to save, and even resurrect, the ideas, tools, and tricks of the past for not just myself but for future generations.

  37. Naomi Christensen says:

I so enjoy your magazines! As a forager, bread baker, and animal lover I have found some amazing articles and philosophy in them. Am ordering your Wild Bread book today, as I need a more streamlined way to ferment sourdough starter. The cheese plates in this issue look scrumptious too!

  38. Pingback: Winner!!! GIVEAWAY: Wild Bread Towel | Raising Jane Journal

  39. Gabrielle Girard says:

I love the healthy recipes and it builds my confidence in myself! There is nothing in your magazine to make women feel bad about themselves.

  40. Rev. Dolores Smith Gibbs says:

Oh, shucks, can you offer them for sale??
Can I tell you I am still reading them, the both I have because I was in Walmart and bought one and fell in love with your style and message. I bought 2 count ’em two years, would have bought more but Jesus might come back by then.

The winner of our Denim Bed giveaway is Janice Hardin, who said in response to our question, “Share with me how it is you happen to be holding a copy of my magazine in your hands (20 years and still growing strong).”:

“It just so happened in this Covid-19 world, I thought I would treat myself to a former pastime of a couple of magazines with some Mother’s Day dollars from my grown daughter, and yours spoke to me from the newsstand. I’m taking my time and enjoying every word.”

Congratulations, Janice! Watch for an email from the farm.

Thank you to all the women who responded with such lovely comments. I thoroughly enjoyed reading them!

  1. Tracie K Provo says:

Very cool! If I answered the question it would go something like this: I stopped on my way in the driveway today with an RX, 2 boxes – 100 ct blue Christmas lights, and a large bag of M&M’s, to get the mail (piled up from the past two days) only to find a package from my favorite aunt, Mary Jane (from PA- now residing in FL- looking forward to her 92nd birthday at end of February 2021) with a copy of your May-April 2020 magazine and a note card from Aunt Jane encouraging me to enjoy the magazine and to pay attention to the article on the health benefits of intermittant fasting. . . SO… Here I am. . . Looking forward to reading the whole issue.

  1. Bonny Garland says:

    I love this pillow

  2. Zoe A. Siperly says:

I have a blue jean quilt my mother made and this pillow would go with it perfectly. Mary Jane Farms and the Glampers have made my heart full of joy and sisterhood!!

  3. It is true that “farmgirl is a condition of the heart”… for over a decade I’ve been longing to, dreaming of, and working towards moving full time to a beloved patch of rural heaven we own. It was hard enough to get it, it’s hard enough to take good care of it on a weekend-and-holiday-only occassion. And it’s CRAZY HARD to leave it each Sunday to go back to our crowded town and wonder how we’ll ever manage to make this transition. But no one can take our farm out of my heart!!!! And with my memory of every excellent moment spent there over the past decade and my imagination of what will be when my dream finally comes true, I remain a true farmgirl, even in the “stuck” places!

  4. Catherine A Grimes says:

Worth it. It’s worth all of it. Be it day dreaming or planning next years garden while caring for a current crop. The pain is worth it.

  5. mary says:

My main outfit are jeans, T-shirt’s and flannel shirts. I gave up dresses except for summer jumpers I made when I left working in an office. This would be so perfect in my home. Farmgirl is in my DNA and thank goodness, now I can say it’s in my grown children’s DNA! both have farms. My grandmother always said I was born in the wrong century and I believe it.

  6. Ally Gledhill says:

Farmgirl is a condition of the heart because no matter where I am in life, whether it’s a five acre farm or tiny duplex without a yard, I know that the lessons I’ve learned from this community will stick with me. I may not have the space to do everything I want, Farmgirls are clever and I can choose to live that farmgirl life.

  7. Lorraine Hess says:

Farmgirl is definitely a condition of the heart. I spent most of my life living in the country. Even though I now live in a small town that is rapidly growing larger I still have a good size garden we eat and preserve from and I still do a lot of crafting. Some day I would like to get back to the country but, for now, I make my escape in my camper.

  8. Carolyn Sanelli says:

Farmgirl is a condition of the heart. I am a city girl by birth but I love to create whether it is growing my herbs, cooking a homecooked meal or creating my own gifts for family members. So would you consider me a farmgirl at heart?

  9. Kay A. Jones says:

While reading my MaryJaneFarm magazine, I am back in my childhood with my country aunt, Aunt May. She had chickens, nursed an occasional stray raccoon, raised rhubarb, and had the most beautiful peonies on earth that would grace my mother’s dining room table. I have pictures of me as a toddler followed by her cats. I believe that is why I love cats today. My garden at my farmhouse stye home in Sunfield will have rhubarb. I have planted peonies. I can hardly wait to make stewed rhubarb and have peonies grace my dining room table in my forever home in Sunfield. God is good. Be blessed, Mary Jane.

  10. Rose Mason says:

Sometimes daily life can become too repetitive and we find a danger of not celebrating our joy in the little things we do. The “farmgirl” attitude is the reminder to our hearts of not only who we are but to live inspired.

  11. Shelly D says:

The magazine articles remind me of my childhood on the farm. And I have a blue jean quilt from my grandmother. This would look wonderful.

Also want to make another quilt out of my grandfather’s jeans. I think I’ll use the same pattern.

  12. Linda Bowlby says:

As a retired farmer’s wife and the daughter of a farmer’s daughter, I love the motivation and encouragement Mary Janes Farm brings to women of all ages, backgrounds and locations. I especially love the articles and features on lost and forgotten skills.

  13. Barbara Mangrum says:

“Farmgirl is a condition of the heart” statement is so true. Farmgirl definitely is a girl whose heart is all about simplicity, creativity, and passion of all things on the farm growing and continuing traditions throughout the years.

  14. Ardis Boll says:

Living in “Rural” Idaho and being a “Farm Girl” is an invaluable life; more so now that “isolation” is so important to all of us. I love Mary Jane’s Farm magazine and all she exemplifies. I have all my subscriptions saved and having retired in my first year I am looking forward to many more years of Farm Girl Attitude!

  15. Susan Pennala says:

I think if we go back far enough, we would all find farmgirls in our lineage. Not only is it a condition of our hearts, it’s imprinted in our DNA!

  16. Dorothy J. Shaulis says:

I live in a rural area surrounded by farmland. Farm machinery going up and down our road here are a common occurrence, as well as Amish buggies. I love the fresh, clean country air, even when they spread manure! I discovered Mary Jane’s Farm Magazine at our local quilt/sewing shop and have subscribed to it. I look forward to all the stories, articles and pictures.

  17. Lora Weber says:

I’ve made many baby quilts for gifts. And a few larger ones too. Love to see different ideas. Love this magazine too. Im all about denim everything.

  18. Tammy Slifer says:

That saying just means “down to earth”, we came from the earth to take care of the Earth. It is the best way to stay healthy in so many ways!! Also helps us to not forget were we came from!!! Its the roots that keep us grounded. I was lucky enough to have these kind of roots!!

  19. Nancy Frazier says:

Farm girl is a condition of the heart means simply that. No matter your “place in life”, the type person that you are is in the heart.

  20. Maureen Justice says:

Has made me relish the simple things and reminds me of when I was a young girl in the farm

  21. Andrea E. says:

Farm girl is a condition of the heart- including whatever makes your heart happy! Holding onto my farm heritage whether I’m hard working outside or at the hospital- homemaking is always where my heart is!

  22. Robin D. says:

I love the idea that regardless of where you are in the world – growing up in a small fishing village in Canada, slogging through a Master’s degree in England, teaching English in remote northern Pakistan or learning to raise a small boy on a wheat farm in Washington – a ‘farmgirl condition of the heart’ travels with you.

  23. Bev Read says:

Denim is dear to my heart. My Mom who has been gone for 34 yrs. She wore her first pair of denim underneath a button-down skirt, as women were not allowed to even wear pants, in our town scandalous! But she wore them with pride!!! She was the heart of our family and loved red roses. I love denim too and wear them on most days. I still laugh and smile when I think of my mom, breaking the denim rules!!!

  24. Lisakay Mindel says:

I am holding this magazine in my hand because I purchased it to get the subscription card inside. My mom LOVES your magazine so I am giving her a subscription for Mother’s Day. Looking through Mary Jane’s farm I can see why and plan on getting a subscription for myself as well. I can’t wait to make the pickled radishes from my garden and to patch the jeans I am currently wearing using the techniques in this issue. I love my mom and couldn’t think of a better gift! Thank you.

  25. Denva Corff says:

means…to enjoy handmade, homegrown, simple things….appreciate all that God has created and find happiness in helping and sharing those in need.

  26. Karen D. Chandler says:

I love and look forward to each new issue. It’s total quality time for just me, away from all the noise and responsibilities that I normally have. The ideas and creations and recipes are great. Just in general fun to read something interesting and important, yet soo fun to read. Thanks Mary Jane, I will be subscribing forever.

  27. MS Barb says:

I was raised in a metropolis area, but love in the country now, and LOVE it!

  28. Ann Senge says:

A farm girl is a condition of the heart. Even though I live on a lake, my gardening is done without pesticides, and nothing but natural fertilizer. No chemicals for my organic crops. I even make my canning labels that state from Murray Lake Gardens. If I could I’d have chickens but my lake association would not allow it. Boo..

  29. Joyce Gardner says:

Always look forward to my next copy of your magazine. I do a lot of gardening. Can always use new ideas

  30. Amy Bassett says:

I used to consider myself a city girl until our family bought a homestead in the countryside of Connecticut. Our happy farmhouse (300 years young!) is surrounded by rambling stone walls as we have added many animals to our farm: alpacas, beehives, chickens, and in the summertime pigs. I love being a farm girl! My soul is fed by the life-giving nature all around!

  31. winnie Jackson says:

Love this pillow out of different shades of blue. This pillow would be welcomed with a time that we are all dealing with this awful virus keeping us from others we love and care for. It would bring me such great comfort in my life cuddling up with it. Thank you for this fantastic contest! All be well and safe, Winniei 🙂

  32. Joyce Johnsonce Johnson says:

No matter what is going on in my life I just remember I’m a farm girl st heart.

  33. Janice Hardin says:

As I consider this, it reminds me of my townie raised daughter, who now thrives on an Ohio farm with her family where they raise otganic grown produce She absolutely loves farm life and it takes me back to visiting my grandparents on that Oklahoma farm every summer. Thank for this delightful re-visit.

  34. Katie weekley says:

This would be for my mom she’s been a fan of yours since the beginning

  35. Linda Bennet says:

It’s a condition of the heart because it’s everything I love: flowers, gardens, food and fashions!

  36. Deloris Bennett says:

“Condition of the Heart” – I am blessed to have always lived in a rural area. When I was a little girl we had pigs, chickens and turkeys. I was a little afraid of all three. I now live about 1/4 mile beyond that house (further into the hollow) and have my own chickens. I’m not an official farm girl, but I’ve been a farm girl at heart for quite a while. My garden has just been plowed and I’m anxious to get the planting started. I like to glam up my vegetable garden with flowers too (and a picnic table with a bench).

  37. Leah Hunter says:

Farmgirl is definitely a condition of my heart. Born to a widowed Mom I was raised to be a housewife, taught housecleaning, cooking, textiles (sewing, knitting, crocheting and all things crafty) and respect for my elders. I now am also a single Mom, raising my kids on a small animal farm with all its challenges and joys! Your magazine gives me an escape into relaxation with every issue!

  38. Cary MILLER says:

“Farmgirl is a condition of the heart” because from the first time you experience the life on a farm it is always there in your heart. I could spend summers on the farm in Idaho and then return home to the city life in California always longing for the time to be back there. It was always a dream of mine to have a little piece of land to call my own, to farm and garden and enjoy nature. Farming is in my blood. My small little piece of land is now my home. I will spend the rest of my days here on Earth working and enjoying this land. It is a true gift!

  39. Abby says:

It’s reminded me I can stay true to my heart and nature no matter where I am or who I’m with.

  40. Rachel Frisbie says:

I take my bit of farmgirl in the burbs and garden and try to lead an organic life.

  41. Renee Paquin says:

I discovered your magazine by accident at my local tractor supply store. I was browsing the magazines and books for something different to read as well as some backyard gardening and canning info. I’m definitely a farm girl at heart. I was raised in the country and gardened and canned anything and everything. I even did it when I was single, for myself and the pleasure of providing for myself. Now I live southern coastal and not country but I have a great husband and a great backyard and still garden and provide for us. Your magazine is truly amazing and inspiring! I love it and it is who I am. I’m looking forward to beginning my subscription.
And I love your denim pillow. I’m all about denim! Your pillow would be a great addition to my many pillows – and I have a lot because of my health issues! But I think your pillow was would take front and center stage to all my others, right next to the neck-pillow my grandma made me many years ago that looks like denim. It’s beautiful!
Thanks so much for your magazine and I’m ecstatic that I discovered it!!

  42. Terry Steinmetz says:

I got my first issue of MJF magazine starting at the Plum Issue. I instantly fell in love with it and the philosophy. It really is your heart that leads you on the paths in your life. Since then I’ve collected, read, re-read all issues. I can’t get enough of MJF! The quilt I chose for my glamper from a church auction is an hand-sewn honeycomb top made all of vintage fabrics. It is a reminder to me that though I don’r live on a farm, I can still have the heart of a farmgirl.

  43. Linda Lundgren says:

5/27/20~I can only say that if my parents didn’t move from Nyack, NY to Glen Gardner, NJ in 1961 when I was 11 THAT I WOULDN’T have become a farmgirl, so to speak. From a “city girl” to living in the “boonies,” as my NY friends and relatives used to say, living right next to a dairy farm was perfect! Made a younger friend there and STARTED WORKING, helping out with herding the cows in the old pickup (no license either!!) and on the horses; driving tractors around plowing fields, doing all the haying, oats and corn too. Best part were the farm lunches AND coming in sometimes seeing friend’s mother making homemade dough for the apple dumplings! Man they were good. (When I make them to this day, think of her). This hexagon pillow may represent all that you wrote, but it just feels comforting and restful to me. I know I was always beat after working and slept like a baby!

  44. Kathy Seery says:

All I can say is everything about this magazine makes my heart happy! Which is the best “condition of the heart” I can think of.

  45. Jessica Kaufmann says:

Farmgirl is condition of the heart it is true. Once you have tasted it, you can never forget it or long for it. I grew up a farmgirl on 120 acres of pure bliss as a young girl. Everyday was a new adventure with the animals or the garden. Every night I went to bed, exhausted and satisfied. “Farmgirl” gets into your blood and your heart and you either live completely satisfied in it, knowing there is nothing better, or you long for it knowing what you are missing. Now that I have children, I long for them to have a similar idealic childhood on a farm, as I did. To have animals and endless fields to adventure in and dream tangible and make believe dreams and experience life in the dirt, with it beneath your fingernails and in your very soul; that is living life to the utmost.

  46. Jessica Kaufmann says:

  47. Cynthia Robb says:

Love the Farm Girl ideology – even though I live in the suburbs. It’s helped me to broaden my outdoor horizons, even though – truth be told – I’m more comfortable indoors. But I love cooking and crafts and love seeing those topics in your magazine.

  48. winnie Jackson says:

growing up in a rural town of Lebanon, CT I can relate to farmgirl Oh how wonderful memories to recall. I recall the farm smells, walking barefooted, eating rhubarb right from the plant at my great-grandmothers land. Everyone should have the experience of farm living, especially children of this world today. People who have not experienced this life don’t know what they are missing. From one farm girl to another, winnie 🙂

  49. Carol Krygoske says:

I have enjoyed your health articles and hand craft ideas for years. I have given your magazine as gifts I enjoy it so much myself.

I love, LOVE your magazine and have been subscribing to it for several years! I grew up on a farm, raised by parents who also each grew up on a farm. In fact, my dad farmed family land that had been in our family since the 1760s! We were the last family members to farm it ourselves. We leased it when Daddy was no longer able to farm it. So, farming is running through our veins! We understand the work ethic, getting dirty more than clean, the pride in doing well in it, and what incredibly special memories we now have! Your magazine is a monthly reminder of how much I loved it, and I enjoy every issue so very much! Thank you for sharing about a lifestyle that has unfortunately become endangered. I pray it’ll be one of the catalysts to inspire other families to become a part of it!

I love all things about country living. I like to can some, sew some, plants and flowers. So when I saw your magazine offered by the publisher clearinghouse, I thought I would give it a try. 28. Tina Savage says:

One of your magazines was left in a room by an ER patient in Madras Oregon where I was working as a travel nurse. On my break I got a chance to look through it that was all it took, love at first look. I now have a subscription and allow myself cover to cover time when it arrives.

  29. Linda Kuipers says:

I am reading the latest issue of your magazine and was totally fascinated by the article about Red Lipstick’s Revolutionary Roots. Susan B Anthony is a 4x removed cousin of mine and I try to save all articles pertaining to women fighting for equal rights. It is fun to read about different ways women used to come together as sisters in equality. That is the main focus of your magazine – bringing women together in a common cause – and it is much appreciated. Thank you for all the women you include in your magazine through stories and authors. the craft section is also fun to read. Thank you

  30. Rose Mason says:

Purchased first copy of your magazine off the shelf. Subscribed and have been subscribing since. Love it so much, I give a gift subscription to my daughter every year. My husband even likes to look. Once he took an issue about raising honey bees to church to share with guy that raises bees. He had told him about the article in conversation, and decided to take him the magazine. Great articles in every issue. Keep it up!

  36. Carmen Witmer says:

MaryJane, it’s been such a blessing to me to have your magazines in my life for the past few years. I’m 40 now, and ever since I was a little girl, I’ve known that my heart yearned for experiences and memories of the quality kind. Growing up in rural PA I watched every episode of Little House on the Prairie and felt that I was born in the wrong era. I’ve combed through shelf after shelf in many stores looking for the right country magazine to captivate me and bring a feeling of satisfaction but they all disappointed, until I found MaryJane’s Farm. I homeschool four wonderful children with such discipline that I forget to enjoy the simple moments I should embrace, but when I pull out an old issue of your magazine I am humbly reminded of the importance of each and every moment happening now, and even those that happened in the lives of the women of my childhood. I’m so thankful for this magazine that you’ve put together and the writers that contribute, who tell my story in such artistic and hilarious ways.

  37. Susan Pennala says:

A few months before my mother passed away, my husband and I happened to find our dream home in the country up for sale. Directly across the dirt road lives my mother’s sister, Auntie Judy. She’s been a wonderful mentor for me and a surrogate grandma for my young kids, especially in my mother’s absence. She shared an issue of MaryJane’s Farm with me about a year ago, and I loved it from the start! Now when I receive my own magazine in the mail, I wait till the house is quiet and the kids are asleep, and I savor every page.

  38. Jill Yeomans says:

I picked up your magazine 4 years ago, and fell in love. I am a So. Cal. girl, but raised in the rural foothills, with chickens, horses, goats and a giant vegetable garden. Even lived in a Teepee for 3 years, hauling water and using gas lamps. Too many fires have burned the ranch, but I still garden and and bake. I cherish Mary Jane’s Farm, and read it the moment I receive it. After a few months, and many reviews of the magazine, I pass it on to like-minded friends. Recycle and share, I’m a MJF girl.

Thank you for bringing me such joy.

  39. Joyce Parrish says:

I happened upon your magazine, Mary Janes Farm, about 6 years ago. I work part time at a fabric store and my boss gave me one. She sells them and got me hooked.

I have been buying your magazine off and on for years. I found it in my local tractor store. I currently have a subscription that was gifted to me by girlfriend for Christmas. Girlfriends always know what makes you happy.

  42. Carol Gibson says:

My Mom, Mary Jane, was a farm girl who had to quit school because her father needed help on the farm when World War II started and her brothers enlisted. I ordered your magazine in her honor. ❤️

  43. Cindy Manicke says:

I hv your magazine because I am basically a farm girl. I was always playing outside, riding horses..always attracted to families with lots of kids and animals. I was a city girl brought up in Eugene, Or. I loved camping. I met my husband to be in Bellevue, Wa. His folks had a apple orchard in Pateros, Wa. Alot of work, but we had fun snapping beans, I learned to can everything for my family. Half acre of garden. Every kind of fruit. We lived in Goldendale, Wa. We had a huge garden and I froze and canned everything. Really hot there, dry land wheat.

  44. Carolynn Neely says:

Hi, I actually found this magazine by accident, My husband is a retired police officer who worked at his cousins dairy farm since he was a kid. One day I went to Tractor Supply with him. Honestly I don’t remember what he was there for but I was bored, so I went looking for cards and magazines this was the first one I picked up I started looking through it standing in the aisle reading through I was fascinated and hooked. I would go there just to buy this magazine now I’m a subscriber and our youngest is a police officer, married with 2 babies. He just recently bought a farm about 20 minutes from here . His dad took him to “the farm” from the time he was 2 hes now 37, his wife is a nurse and he wants to raise his boys the way he was raised even though it wasnt our farm. He loved every minute . Now my husband goes to our sons “farm to be”. and to auctions buying equipment they’ll need. Its has come full circle and we couldn’t be happier for him. I’m so sorry I just told you about our whole life. Truth is I’m learning so much from your magazine and look forward to every issue. .

    Linda Rogers

  48. Stephanie Ogle says:

I discovered your magazine several years ago and look forward to reading each issue. I also gift it to two other family members for Christmas presents. I was raised on a farm and many of the articles remind me of those days and past family members. Growing up on a farm teaches one many beneficial skills that aren’t always recognized until later in life. Of course, a big part of farm life is denim. Denim is simple, comfortable, durable, useful, decorative, and, of course, it may be repurposed. I was very excited to see the new bedding you are offering is denim. There are so many useful tips in your magazine, interesting stories, cool pictures, craft ideas, and delicious recipes. Thank you for producing such a beneficial magazine.
