Saturday Market

It was a beautiful day yesterday on the Palouse. Maybe it was the weather, low 80s with a lovely breeze. Maybe it was the long bike ride we took getting to the Farmers’ Market. Maybe it was the live band that was playing all my grandmother’s favorite big band tunes. Or maybe it was the happiness these two daughters of mine exude over the simplest of things.2014-09-06 10.04.14Or maybe it was the brunch date at our favorite outdoor breakfast nook with Nanny Jane.

2014-09-06 10.07.33

Probably it was all of it that made it so fabulous! (We love our little town.)

Farmers Markets are wonderful creations. Our farmers here in the Tri-Cities grow the best veggies around. The season is starting to wind down in my garden, so I will rely on them for my fresh produce.

  1. Winnie Nielsen says:

MaryJane– Internet killed by last nights storm and this morning while I am feeding the cat, an armed robber bolted into my house and ran out the front door!!!!! The back door was already open so he just blew through. I ran out after him and saw an armed policeman in my street telling me to get inside and lock the doors. It is all a blur but the police and dogs ran him down next door and got the gun. I had to identify him in a police car with two way windows so he couldn’t see me. Today I am grateful for the Gainesville Police Dept.!! But I am a bit rattled to say the least. We are going out of town so I hope to be back later after my heart stops racing!

    • MaryJane says:

Now my heart is racing. Our precious Winnie so close to being in harm’s way. Soooooo thankful you were not hurt and so very thankful for those who serve us. What an awful thing to have your home violated like that. Love, love, LOVE your way.

We love a parade!

How do we celebrate Independence Day? Why, with a parade, of course. But this little gem is no ordinary parade. In the neighboring town of Johnson, Washington (population about 50-100 on a good day), hilarity, innovation, and creativity ensue while some 3,000 people converge on either side of a rural road leading to a huge grain silo, one of the only structures in Johnson. Marchers gather in an open field about 1/4 mile down the road, stroll to the grain elevator, and march back the way they came. Not only do attendees get to enjoy the parade as it passes by, but also when it passes BACK by! johnson-IMG_4007 And what they might see includes a crazy array of kinetic sculpture (including a working Ferris wheel), johnson-IMG_4042 a fire truck and firemen with large water guns who spray delighted youngsters with water, a flock of grown-up girls parading as pink flamingoes, the motley crew of the Moscow Volunteer Peace Band (think feather boas and tie-dye), bagpipers, soldiers, politicians, classic cars, a train made from recycled materials, and even farm equipment, both adorned and unadorned (a farmer loves to show off equipment). johnson-IMG_4071 The year Michael Jackson died, a group of college girls dressed up in paint masks and single sparkly gloves and danced their way down the road and back. You’ll even see a little car that splits in half, each part driving independent of its other half. The parade was organized on a whim more than 40 years ago by a local farm family, the Druffels. Each parade is loosely organized around a theme; last year’s was Star Wars. Druffel patriarch, 93-year-old John, said he hadn’t heard of Star Wars, but he good-naturedly joined the fun, parading with a lightsaber dressed as Luke Skywalker. johnson-IMG_4036 John passed away earlier this year, but on July 4th, his large family (over 70 members to date) will join with thousands of participants from nearby communities to honor this fun-loving farmer.

  1. Debbie Fischer says:

Oh what fun this parade looks like. There is nothing in the world as good as a small town parade I don’t think.
Happy 4th to all of you at the farm, have a fun and happy weekend with family.

    Hugs,
    Debbie

  2. Karlyne says:

Awww, this is Americana at its best!

  3. Karlyne says:

Are you planning on a 4th of July … “party” this year? I’m looking 6 months forward to sunshine.

D-day Commemoration

Hi MaryJane ~ The Bee Nation book (gosh I loved that book!) talks about the Women’s Land Army of America movement in WWII. Intrigued, I began reading up on the Internet to learn more. The women were known as farmerettes, which got me to thinking about how the MJF sisterhood is a sort of continuation of this great American legacy. Women were offered classes on how to be a farmer before being shipped off to their assignments … The MJF parallel is the farm-related badges we all enjoy doing with great pride. The program was mirrored from the one in Great Britain and launched in WWI here to accomplish the same goals of feeding the nation at war. Here is a poster of a training session during WWI that takes place in Charlottesville, VA, at the University of Virginia, which is where I grew up! It was a two-month program.

  1. Winnie Nielsen says:

Thank-you for sharing, Mary Jane! And anyone who doesn’t know about the Women’s Land Army of America, it is fascinating and was a very important national movement here at home. In some small way, I take great pride in feeling a bit like a true Farmerette, now in 2014, all through our learning together here at MaryJanes Farm!

  2. Rebecca Taylor says:

Quick question, who wrote The Bee Nation?
I would really like to read it but I can’t find it at my library.

    Happy Birthday!!

    • MaryJane says:

How sweet of everyone!!!! I’m pretty low-key about b-days, mine that is. I did take Carol and all the other gals here out to breakfast, a place and time for chatting without deadlines and pressure. Enjoyed every minute of it, a b-day present to myself:) Hubby gave me roses and I spent the day working away on this and that project. Nothing spectacularly special … milked my cows, ate a plate of beets, took a long bath, contemplated all my blessings (couldn’t count them “one by one” (church song I grew up singing) because I’ve been gifted too many. I count you amongst them!!!

  8. Debbie says:

Happy B-Day to you both… Good to hear you got out for some ” Girl Gab ” on your special day!
    farmgirl hugs!
    Deb

  9. Debbie says:

    ” and grub ” … Sorry, couldn’t help myself…

Farmgirls in the Big Apple

You know the saying … You can take the girls out of the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the girls. Or something like that, right? It’s so true, but it’s always good to venture out and double check. Besides, coming back home can feel so good.

We were pretty excited for our adventure. The teddy bears might have felt otherwise, but they were good sports.

It was a windy day, but the pilots got us safely out of Idaho and on our way to the big city.

Photo Mar 20, 11 58 19 AM

We checked into our hotel with a midnight snack, then off to dream about our first day in the city.

Good morning, Manhattan!

Photo Mar 21, 6 47 16 AM

Look out city, here we come (in our farm boots, of course).

Photo Mar 24, 10 13 50 AM

We loved the Museum of Natural History, and after an entire day wandering the halls, we still have a list of things to do for next time. I love it when my girls voluntarily hold hands.

Photo Mar 26, 1 05 04 PM

Rockefeller Center is awesome, especially on a windy day with all the world flags flapping above. And of course, having just learned to ice skate back home, the girls had fun watching the Zamboni do its thing.

Photo Mar 24, 1 17 22 PM

We could have spent the entire week in Central Park. But alas, it was time to pack up and head home.

Photo Mar 22, 1 29 58 PM

Good night, Manhattan. Until next time … tomorrow to be exact, when I share why we were in NYC plus a Big Moment GIVEAWAY!

I once had a biology class requirement to weekly measure the growth of tree buds from Winter to Spring. So quiet but every moving forward, the buds rewarded me with glorious leaves come early April!

Cute birdhouse! Do birds really nest in it for you? I love how it is made from rustic pieces.

    • MaryJane says:

They do next in this bird house. We have about 40 of these around the farm. It’s adorable when you walk by and a little head pokes out.

Matt Damon look-alike

My sister’s daughter, Tina Withers, her husband Ron, and three of their children stopped by en route home from Thanksgiving with his family in Spokane. I asked their son Andrew, an 11th grader, “Has anyone ever said you look like Matt Damon?” “They have,” he replied. I wonder though, can Matt play the piano? Andrew can; he plays at church and school functions. Does it help that Andrew’s younger brother is named Matthew? What do you think? Look-alike? Easily a stand-in? Carbon copy? Ringer or dead ringer?

  1. Winnie Nielsen says:

Yep! A true look alike! He is a handsome young lad!!

  2. Connie-Killarney says:

    He is Matt’s MINI -ME!

  3. Debbie Fischer says:

Wow, Matt’s twin, looks just like him. Look at the smile?

  4. Yes he does! Would be the perfect candidate to play in a movie of a younger version of M. Damon.

  5. Karlyne says:

Oh, I think he’s much cuter than Matt Damon!
