Sandy Aftermath

Thinking of our friends in the East.

  1. Alice - Farmgirl 12 says:

Thank you – that was scary yesterday. I live inland a bit so we didn’t get the torrential rain and flooding from the coast, but the wind was unbelievable – going out in a bit to survey the damage. Waiting to see if the governor is lifting the ban on keeping non-official vehicles off the roads again today. If not, no work again today! I must say, it was so very gratifying to see all the well wishes via Facebook and email. Thank you again!

  2. Terry Steinmetz says:

We are out here in CT. visiting our kids about 26 miles from the Coast. The hurricane is gone, and all we got were high winds and some rain. We are thankful.

  3. Laurie Dimino says:

Here on Long Island, over 700,000 are without power. We are one of the fortunate few whit electricity but no phone/cable or internet. I came over to my sisters house where she has everything….so I am able to check email etc. Schools closed tomorrow- a this point I am thinking they might not reopen this week. Lots of trees down, but havent heard anything about people injured here thank God. The Island is a Mess, but we are grateful that everyone is safe. Now the cleanup begins, Prayers for all that are without power. Stay strong and safe.
    Hugs,
    Laurie

  4. Debbie says:

All is well here in Plymouth, MA . The beach roads and cottages in our beach community dodged a bullet with this storm. Word this morning was, not much dune erosion, no wash outs on the only road in and minimal snow fence damage…WHEW! We were without power for about 15 hours, but it was on this am in time to make pumpkin spice coffee! Our New York and New Jersey neighbor’s got hit very hard… Counting our blessings here and keeping our more southerly eastern seaboard neighbors in our thoughts and prayers today…
Thanks to all for the well wishes on the Beach Farmgirl blog and facebook!

I have been glued to the TV watching all of the events. We are still having high winds here in Florida from the effects of storm which left us on Monday!

Meanwhile, the barn goes on …

Do you see those ominous clouds behind the new barn we’re raising? Winter is coming! We all cried a little tear last week when we had our first snowfall at the farm. Not that we don’t love winter—we just hope it comes after Halloween. It’s a little cold walking around trick-or-treating in your Elvira costume. Fall at the farm is so beautiful, we hate to see it go. Brian is especially hoping we stave off those little white flakes as long as possible. He’s stuck in the muck of “mud season” trying to get our new barn finished before the white stuff seriously piles up.

It will get done, it always does! Persevere!!!

  2. Winnie Nielsen says:

What is amazing to me , loving here in Florida is that it is snowing and we are only getting our first cool days and eves! Snow before Halloween?? I can’t even image what that feels like. We usually have a hot and humid Halloween so kids are miserable in some of the costumes.

Glamping Fabric

Meanwhile, back home, Lou and Saralou are outside in the SNOW (what!!!) gathering leaves for a fun little bouquet project involving some of my glamping fabric, specifically the red. Sorry about the snow ladies. Here in Houston it’s balmy and warm.

The beginning of a bud …

turns into a gorgeous fall centerpiece.

Idaho is turning white while I’m away.

  1. Terry Steinmetz says:

The first snow is ALWAYS the prettiest! I can’t wait for it to snow here:-)

blue eyes for blue eyes…

My mother-in-law has brilliant blue eyes that she passed along to her son, and now, our oldest. It works out well when both grandmothers have blue eyes—someone is bound to inherit them.

On the drive to meet my mother-in-law for the first time, prior to her being my mother-in-law of course, I was so nervous, the sweat was …

I had the greatest mother-in-law!!! She was always so understanding, loving me from the first, too, and being my biggest advocate, for which I will be forever grateful! I hope I’m the same kind of mother-in-law!

Happiness …

We all know happiness can’t be bought or sold. And we know we can’t expect anyone to create happiness for us, right? So if you can’t buy something to make you happy and you’re supposed to make yourself happy, how is that done exactly?

I love to swing & go down slides…pure happiness. I love to walk through the fallen leaves in fall & hear them swish…pure happiness. I love to walk through mud puddles…pure happiness.

  2. Winnie Nielsen says:

Happiness seems so challenged by the demands of working. Having to be doing the business agenda all day robs me of energy and awareness of those tiny things still possible to do that increase happiness. Why IS that so hard to do???

  3. I totally agree with the part about being happy like a child for no reason. It is so freeing and delightful, simplistic and fun. Great read. Thanks.

  4. Amy Axworthy says:

We have talked often this summer about hanging a tire swing for our grandchildren. After reading about the joy of reaching out for the sky on a swing, I think that is going to happen this weekend! I always loved the swings on my grandfathers farm in southwestern PA. My brothers and I would race to the orchard when we arrived at the farm to be first on the swings. Such a simple, joyful time. And another wonderful memory was the big, wide porch swing, covered with puffy cushions that my mothers friend Betty had on her front porch. I think we need one of those as well. Thank you for reminding me of those wonderful moments in my life.

  5. Megan says:

The sounds of fall make me oh so happy too! And Amy, I love your image of the porch swing! I hope you had a weekend filled with happiness and swinging on your tire swing!
